The Abandoned River

For many years, the river was my main source of photographic inspiration. On weekends, I used to take hiking routes along the Sor River, which is relatively close to home. It’s a natural area I’ve walked through hundreds of times, and I never get tired of visiting it. I owe much of my photographic experience to that place, and some of my best shots were taken there.

These days, I’m in full exploration mode, and what motivates me is covering miles and discovering new places. That’s why rivers have taken a bit of a back seat, reserved for occasional moments, while my focus has shifted toward other subjects.

Still, a couple of months ago, I stumbled upon a small spot with tremendous photographic potential, very different from any other river scene in my area. I imagine it doesn’t always look like that, as the river was especially low, and the banks were dry, with a pale earthy tone that contrasted sharply with the rest of the landscape. The location is nestled between mountains, giving it a sense of isolation, even a slightly eerie atmosphere, amplified by the dark color of the water. And yet, there’s something idyllic about it, especially with the fresh green buds just beginning to sprout on the trees. Perhaps what makes the place so striking is all those contrasts, along with its undeniable beauty.

The spot is located near the Doiras Reservoir, heading down the AS-12 from Boal into the interior, just past the village that gives the reservoir its name. The whole area is truly scenic, but this particular corner left me wanting to return and give it the time and attention it deserves.
