During the Easter holidays, I took the opportunity to go on a road trip through northern Spain. The original idea was to follow the coast all the way to Canfranc, a destination I decided on along the way, but in the end, I made a slight change to the route in order to circle around the Picos de Europa. Although I had visited Covadonga and the Cares Trail many years ago, I had never taken that route before, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity.
I spent nearly the entire day driving along the N-625 and N-621. As you’d expect, the scenery is spectacular throughout nearly the whole stretch, and it’s well worth doing at least once. Since the weather wasn’t great and my car didn’t have the best tires for mountain driving, I mostly stuck to the main route, especially since it was snowing at certain points. But while descending along the N-625, I took a short detour to catch a glimpse of the inner mountain landscape, specifically in the area of Amieva.
The road was especially narrow, but the surface was in good condition. In fact, many sections were made of concrete, with grooves carved into them to improve tire grip. After driving several kilometers, I reached the end of the road, which finishes at a small hydroelectric plant. The feeling of being surrounded by those towering giants was overwhelming. I took a lot of photos, one of which I’m sharing today. What caught my eye was the fragility of a lone post standing in contrast with the immensity of the mountains. It’s a good reminder of our place in nature. We’ve achieved incredible things, but we’re still a long way from matching what nature is capable of. A little humility never hurts.
